Residential Troubleshooting: If you have a residential HVAC system, you likely have what’s called a “split system.” That’s a system where half of the system is on the inside of your home (attic, garage, closet, crawlspace) and the other half is on the outside of your home (side yard, back yard). The inside portion of your system is called the “air handler,” and the outside portion is called the “condenser.”
Air Handler: The air handler is the part of your unit responsible for circulating the air throughout your home. It houses your blower, heating elements/heat exchange, and your evaporator coils. Does your blower work? Switch the “fan” setting on your thermostat to “on.” You should notice air blowing out your vents.
Condenser: The condenser is the part of your unit that condenses the refrigerant so that it can undergo the regeneration cycle again. The main contents of a condenser are a compressor, condenser coils, and a condenser fan. Is your thermostat switched to the “cool” setting? Remember, the condenser will not come on if the thermostat does not tell it to. Note: you should have a target temperature set lower than the current temperature to activate cooling.
Thermostat: Does your thermostat require batteries? If so, have you tried changing them? If your thermostat is not turning on, dead batteries could be the issue.
